Homemade Dog Food Recipes

Making dog food takes time and some planning. The recipes should be rich in nutrition. It is an essential part of dog food. There are different ways to make homemade dog food to increase their health and life span.



Different Types of Homemade Dog Food



1. Raw Dog Food (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) or BARF (Bones & Raw Food):

As we all know meat is the most native diet for dogs. We cannot eat raw meat as meat has bacteria that can harm our digestive systems. So we need to cook it. But when cooked, proteins, vitamins, and minerals in the meat break down. But dogs are not generally susceptible to bacteria. Therefore raw meat, high in moisture provides a significant dose of your dog's daily water requirement which is great for proper function of kidney. Majority of your dog's diet should consist of meat protein that all dogs can digest can thrive on.



2. Holistic Dog Food:

You will require:

a. 1 tablespoon olive oil.

b. 1/2 tablespoon bone meal.

c. Multivitamin as directed for body weight

d. 1 capsule of fish oil but not necessary if you are feeding an oily fish like salmon.

e. 500mg vitamin C

f. 400iu vitamin E



Now:

a. You will need to feed 4 units of protein per day. (1 unit = 2 oz meat/fish)

b. 1 medium egg, 1/2 cup yogurt. (1/2 cup of yogurt = 1 unit of carbohydrate)

c. 1/3 cup cottage cheese. (1/2 cup of cottage cheese = 1 unit of carbohydrate)

d. 2 oz organ meat. (Can feed up to 1 unit of organ meat several times a week)

e. Feed 4 units of carbohydrates per day. (1 unit of carbohydrate = 1 cup vegetables i.e. broccoli, brussel sprouts, greenbeans, peas, cabbage, spinich, squashes)

f. 1/2 cup fruits i.e. melons, berries, bananas, tomatoes, apples, carrots (1/2 cup).

g. 1/4 cup cooked beans, lentils or chick peas.

h. 1/3 cup of grains i.e. oatmeal/barley can be added.



For a 25lb dog this food will be enough but will be double for a 50lb dog and half the amount for a 12lb dog. Remember grains are generally the least favorable type of carbohydrate for a dog. Try to limit this to 1 unit of the total amount fed per day.

3. Turkey Special:

You will require:

a. 6 cups water.

b. 1 pound ground turkey.

c. 2 cups brown rice.

d. 1 teaspoon dried rosemary.

e. 1/2 (16 ounce) package frozen broccoli, carrots and cauliflower combination.

Now:

Place the water, ground turkey, rice, and rosemary into a large saucepan or Dutch oven. Stir until the ground turkey is broken up and evenly distributed throughout the mixture. Bring to a boil over high heat then reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the frozen vegetables, and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat and cool. Refrigerate until using.



4. Chicken Delight:

You will require:

a. Pounds minced chicken meat.

b. 1/2 cups frozen vegetable blend (no garlic or onions), minced.

c. 4 cups rice.

d. 6 1/2 cups water.



Now:

Place chicken, vegetables, and rice into a large saucepan or Dutch oven. Stir in water until the mixture is smooth. Place over medium-high heat and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Then reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer about 25 minutes until the rice is tender and all of the liquid has been absorbed. But cool it completely before serving. You can store it covered in the refrigerator.



5. Breakfast Bars:

You will require:

a. 10 to 20 Breakfast Bars (approx.) depending upon the size you cut.

b. 4 cups oats.

c. 1 cup buckwheat or millet, or wheat or barley.

d. 1 cup of whole-wheat flour.

e. 1 cup boiling water.

f. 8 tablespoons cold-pressed safflower oil.

g. 8 tablespoons blackstrap molasses.

h. 2 tablespoons raw honey.

i. 4 medium eggs.

j. 1 cup of raisins (optional).



Now:

Set oven for 350 degree. Put all the ingredients into a large bowl and mix with about 1 cup of boiling water. Make a sticky dough. Place on a well-greased baking pan and bake it for 45 minutes. Then, take out and score into square. Turn it out onto a wire rack to cool. It is done but it your dog prefers his breakfast bars crispy then you will have to put it back into the oven when you turn it off and leave it overnight to dry.
